Battle Ground Public Schools' bands piling up the accolades

The music programs at Battle Ground Schools have been enjoying a great deal of success lately. Here’s a quick rundown of just some of the events that our bands have been competing in. 

Clark College Jazz Festival
More than a thousand students from 55 schools filled Gaiser Hall for the 56th Annual Clark College Jazz Festival in January, and Battle Ground schools were well represented over the course of the three-day event. 

The Chief Umtuch Middle School Advanced Band took third place in the Middle School Silver Division and received the Blue Division Judge’s Award. 
Outstanding Middle School Jazz Musician certificates were awarded to Isaac Moroshan of Laurin, Shelby McCombs of Pleasant Valley, Dominic Mendoza from Chief Umtuch, and Grady McHenry from Tukes Valley. 

Outstanding high school musician awards went to Kaelyn White from Battle Ground High School in the AA Division, while Ashton Hemming and Dominic Mendoza from Battle Ground High School and Tony Brence and Ericka Mecham from Prairie High School received awards in the AAA Division.

Prairie High School took 2nd place in the High School Jazz Ensemble AAA division, and Battle Ground High School's Advanced band took second place in the AAAA Division. 

Outstanding high school musician awards for the AAAA Division went to Laney Pham and Shane Walz of Battle Ground High School.

West Salem Jazz Festival

Prairie High School's Jazz Band took first place in the advanced division and won Outstanding Section Awards for trombone, trumpet, and saxophone. Soloist awards were presented to PHS students Tony Brence, Donovan Benko, and Ericka Mecham.

Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival

The Prairie High School Jazz Band took first place in both the AAA division and in the Advanced Jazz Combo division. 

Clackamas Jazz Festival 

The Chief Umtuch Middle School Jazz Band took first place with students Matthew Hughey and Dominic Mendoza taking home Outstanding Musician Awards. 

Pleasant Valley Middle School's band placed third, and Shelby Combs received an Outstanding Musician Award.

Battle Ground High School's Advanced Jazz Band placed third in the 6A Division; Prairie High School's Jazz Band 1 placed second in the 5A Division; and Battle Ground High School's Intermediate 2 band placed third in the 4A Division.

Prairie High School senior Ericka Mecham won the Festival Musician Award and a two-year tuition waiver to Clackamas Community College.
