Maple Grove Says Goodbye to Therapy Dog Miss Murphy

September 19, 2014

Over the past eight years, Maple Grove students and families have benefited from the playfulness and support of a therapy dog, Miss Murphy the Golden Retriever. Miss Murphy joined the middle school as a puppy. She worked with her owner, school psychologist Tracey Viall, to help calm and bring comfort to struggling students.

"Miss Murphy was very special. She gave so much love and brought so much joy to so many people. She was a valued member of our staff. We will really miss her," said Denny Waters, Executive Director of Special Services for BGPS.

Miss Murphy had been known to imitate district administrators like Waters, as staff have a favorite photo of her wearing his reading glasses and sitting behind his desk.

Murphy, as the kids lovingly called her, died Wednesday after an undetermined illness. She was 8 years old. BGPS sends its thoughts to Tracey and the staff and students at Maple Grove, and the rest of Murphy's family. Counselors were available to talk with students about the loss of the school dog.
