The Law

By Washington state law (RCW 28A.230.070), students attending a public school are required to receive instruction on HIV/AIDS and its prevention. This instruction must take place each year, from 5th grade through 12th grade. At CAM Academy, this instruction is provided by the parents.Parents do have the right, however to exclude their child(ren) from this instruction, after reviewing the state-adopted curriculum.

The Process

This district web page provides the following steps in more detail.

  • Review the curriculum, either online, at a district meeting, or on CAM Academy’s campus. Click here for meeting dates and the link for the online curriculum.
  • If you choose to present the curriculum to your child(ren), you can use the online curriculum by following this link, or check out a hardcopy from Mrs. Williamson.
  • Once the instruction is complete, notify your child’s homeroom teacher (5th-8th) or advisor (9th-12th).
  • If you choose to exclude your child(ren) after previewing the curriculum, you may submit your “Request to Exclude” online by clicking here. This is an online survey through Survey Monkey. All information is kept confidential.

Once you have excluded your child(ren), your family will remain excluded until you choose to opt back in. This includes any exclusions submitted within the past two years.

Please email Ms. Williamson, Dean of Students, with any questions you may have about the process.
