School Health Services

“You cannot educate a child who is not healthy; you cannot keep a child healthy who is not educated.”                                    Dr. Jocelyn Elders, Former United States Surgeon General

The goal of BGSD School Nurses is to support the educational process by improving the  health and safety of our students. The American Academy of Pediatrics says school nurses provide the best means of ensuring a strong connection with a student’s medical home, facilitating access to care, and bridging health, education, and social services for students.

As education and health care have changed over the years, so has school nursing. Each of the 10 Registered Nurses in our district oversees the health and welfare, on average, of 1,400 children and numerous staff members.  Our health rooms average 50 visits a day.  Annually, more than 30,000 doses of medications are given, 80 or more emergency 911 calls are made, and thousands of parents are contacted for a host of health-related issues.

Our work is not confined to our offices. We interact with other professionals, including teachers, doctors, administrators, social workers, school psychologists and counselors.  We work behind the scenes to support the educational process by helping ensure that students are safe, healthy and ready to learn.

We practice and deliver services as Registered Nurses under the professional standards and licensure requirements set by the Washington State Board of Nursing, the Washington State Board of Education and our professional nursing organization.
