Battle Ground Schools’ Deputy Superintendent wins state award

Deputy Superintendent Denny WatersBattle Ground Public Schools’ Deputy Superintendent Denny Waters has been named a most effective school administrator in the state of Washington for 2020 by his peers. Waters was selected as the recipient of the Robert J. Handy Most Effective Administrator Award in the large size school district category. He was recognized at the Washington Association of School Administrators (WASA) Summer Conference, which was held virtually this year.

“Denny is very deserving of this award,” said Angela Allen, Battle Ground Public Schools’ Director of Instructional Leadership for Secondary and Alternative Schools, who nominated Waters for the award. “He has worked tirelessly to bring our district closer together under common coherence goals to make sure that we are all working together to create the best learning experiences for our students.”

Established in 2002, The Robert J. Handy Most Effective Administrator Award, sponsored by PEMCO Insurance and WASA, recognizes outstanding Washington public school administrators. One highly effective superintendent, central office administrator, or building administrator is selected from a small district (up to 500 students), medium-sized district (501–2,000 students), and large district (over 2,000 students). A $10,500 award is equally divided among the three winners. The award may be used for personal or professional growth and/or to support and disseminate information about a successful school or district program.

A peer committee selects the recipients from nominations that describe how each nominee is taking part in realizing the nine characteristics of high performing schools and/or districts as defined by research from the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction.
