Scrooge’s past a focus of Battle Ground High School’s fall drama production

Nov. 9, 2022

BGHS Drama students on stageFor the first time in over two years, the Battle Ground High School drama club is putting on their fall production on schedule.

“It has been such a relief, not having to worry about whether or not we are going to have to shut down the show, or, as we had to do last year, postpone for four months before we bring the show to production,” said drama director Stephan “Cash” Henry. “The students appear to really be having fun with the show, and it is great to see them all working together to bring this to fruition.”

This year’s production of A Christmas Carol reintroduces an original play penned by Henry in 2015 that asks the question: HowBGHS Drama students on stage did Scrooge become Scrooge?

“It takes a longer look at the backstory of Ebenezer Scrooge’s youth,” Henry said. “How he came to meet and become partners with Jacob Marley, his disdain for love and marriage and his anger at the system of workhouses and prisons.”

Henry says he spent the summer refining the play to provide greater tension and backstory. Some scenes will be immediately familiar to fans of the Charles Dickens classic, while others will hopefully provide a “better, more empathetic understanding of this much maligned man.”

There will be a total of six performances, Nov. 10-12 and 17-19, all at The Lair inside Battle Ground High School (300 West Main Street). Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. with curtains up at 7 p.m. Tickets are $7 per person and available online or at the door (cash only).
