Battle Ground Public Schools makes security enhancements, connects Glenwood/Laurin sewer

Maintenance worker at a schoolBattle Ground Public Schools has been working this summer to make recommended security improvements and regular scheduled maintenance to maintain the community’s investments in school facilities. The goal is for work to be completed by the time students return to schools for in-person learning.

Safety and security
The district began making security improvements to campuses two years ago after contracting with 4Pointe LLC to provide a safety and security assessment for the purpose of enhancing the safety and security of school buildings. Based on the principles of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design, the assessment included recommendations to enhance school buildings beginning with the outside, and moving to the inside. As a result of the assessment, the district has worked to trim bushes and hedges away from buildings and windows and cut back other vegetation to improve visibility and line of sight on campuses. Now the district is installing security fencing on some campuses, including at Prairie High School and the Pleasant Valley campus. Fencing will also be installed at Battle Ground High School.

Regular and interval maintenance
The district also has been working during the summer months to complete regular and interval maintenance projects that help preserve buildings. One interval project completed this summer is the preparation and painting of the exterior buildings on the Daybreak campus, which was built as part of the bond measure passed in 2005. The school is now 13 years old. Other interval projects include a new roof on Amboy Middle School, a new roof on the B building at the Lewisville campus, and new carpet at Prairie High School to replace the nearly 50-year-old flooring.

Also recently completed is the connection of the Glenwood Heights Primary and Laurin Middle School campuses to public sewer. These campuses had been on septic since they were built in 1956 and 1965, and the system could no longer support the growth of students coming into the area. The district redrew boundaries for fall 2019 with the help of a community committee to help absorb the growth across the district.

Below is a list of some of the more notable projects, including the addition of a covered play area for Maple Grove Primary. These projects are largely funded thanks to levy dollars:
