A big week for student musicians in Battle Ground Public Schools

Skyview Jazz Festival

It has been a banner week for student musicians all across Battle Ground Public Schools. At the recent Skyview Jazz Festival held Saturday, Dec. 3, Battle Ground High School’s Advanced Jazz Band took home first place in the open division. Intermediate Jazz Band I took home second place in their division. Grace Wing, Zackery Milliner and Cienna Morrison (pictured) each took home Outstanding Soloist awards. Check out a recording of the performances on the Battle Ground Band Boosters’ Facebook page.

In the middle school division, Chief Umtuch and Tukes Valley middle schools’ jazz bands took home second and third place respectively. Outstanding Soloist awards went to Temprance Gillis of Tukes Valley and Eli Lennick, Teage Richins and Piper Strong of Chief Umtuch.

All-State and All-Northwest selections

The National Association for Music Educators has named their 2023 All-Northwest and All-State selections. These musicians were selected from over 3,000 applicants and will have a chance to practice and perform in front of renowned conductors in Bellevue, Washington, Feb. 17-18, 2023. Prairie High School clarinet player Mickai Nordberg and Battle Ground High School trumpet player Grady McHenry were selected to participate. At the middle school level, Temprance Gillis of Tukes Valley was selected to the Junior All-State band (equivalent to a high school All-Northwest selections). At Chief Umtuch, All-State band selections include Cole Schafer, Michael Hard, Colton Diamond, Maddox Chun-Conley, Elijah Lennick (jazz) and Gavin DeMoss (jazz).
