District preparing for Feb. 22 middle school hybrid start

Feb. 3, 2021
The story was updated Feb. 16 to reflect that the Group A fifth grade orientation has been postponed to Friday, Feb. 19 due to weather.

As you may be aware, Clark County Public Health announced today that COVID-19 activity has dropped to the moderate level in the county. In light of the decrease, Battle Ground Public Schools is preparing to bring middle school students in for hybrid learning beginning the week of Feb. 22, with fifth graders attending an orientation the week before.

In accordance with the state metrics, districts can bring middle school students into buildings for in-person learning when the COVID-19 activity level falls within the moderate level.

Some of the details to note are:

  • Fifth graders will attend a half-day orientation on Feb. 19 (Group A students) or Feb. 18 (Group B students) in the morning during their direct instruction time. Watch for more information from your school.
  • Hybrid learning will begin Feb. 22 for middle school students, including at CAM Academy. River HomeLink students will remain remote at this time.
  • Learning schedules will change for both remote and hybrid students. Those who have opted to stay remote will continue to learn remotely; however, when hybrid learning begins, schedules will change for students who participate in hybrid learning and for those who continue to learn remotely. In order to provide all students with an equitable experience, account for the complexity in scheduling and provide access to resources and support services, we need to have students on similar learning schedules regardless of their learning model.

Middle School Learning Schedule
Students have been divided into two groups to accommodate physical distancing during in-person learning. All students will have two days each week of direct instruction. The remaining three days, students will continue independent learning at home. In general, the middle school learning schedule is

  • Hybrid Group A will attend in person 8:10 a.m. to 12:40 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday.
  • Hybrid Group B will attend in person 8:10 a.m. to 12:40 p.m. on Thursday and Friday.
  • Remote learners will have direct instruction via Zoom video conferencing software two days per week with a remote-assigned teacher, 8:10 a.m. to 12:40 p.m. Monday and Tuesday OR 8:10 a.m. to 12:40 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Each remote student will also have three days of independent learning at home.
  • For all students, specialist time will be provided remotely at a designated time on their independent learning days (For Group A: Thursday and Friday, For Group B: Monday and Tuesday).

During independent learning time, teachers will provide assignments for students to continue working on at home. Access to teachers may be limited when teachers are working with other students in the classroom or on Zoom.

The district will follow state health guidelines for safety and cleaning protocols, including for attestation, physical distancing, the wearing of face coverings, personal hygiene, and cleaning. Details about bus routes, attestation and other logistics will be provided as the first day of hybrid learning approaches.

Thank you for your patience as we transition to hybrid learning. A conscientious and phased transition is the safest way to get students back into classrooms and allows the district to ramp up attestation, transportation, lunch and other services and provide the opportunity to make adjustments. If something isn’t working, we want to be able to make changes so that we are doing what is best for our students.

Thank you,
Battle Ground Public Schools

FAQ
