iQ Credit Union donation fuels Family and Community Resource Center shopping spree

Dec. 9, 2021

How many rolls of toilet paper, packages of wet wipes, or bottles of laundry detergent and dish soap can you get for a thousand dollars? Turns out, quite a lot.

On a chilly Friday morning, iQ Credit Union volunteers joined employees with the Battle Ground Public Schools Family and Community Resource Center (FCRC) at the Battle Ground Fred Meyer store to pile shopping carts full to overflowing with those high demand items.

“Toiletry items are the most critical thing that we always need,” said Lydia Sanders, Family Support Services Coordinator for the district. “Especially for folks who might be living out of their car for some time, those wet wipes come in really handy for them.”iQ Credit Union was started by a group of ten educators, and Education Coordinator Molly O’Connor said they have long tried to find ways to support local schools. The $1,000 donation to the Battle Ground Education Foundation was just the latest example of that.

“We had some options floating around,” O’Connor said of the shopping spree idea. “We thought, ‘let’s take them shopping and make it a little more fun.’”

The Battle Ground Fred Meyer quickly agreed to take part, and even chipped in with ten percent off the total purchase. Dressed up in Christmas lights, Santa hats, and other holiday attire, the FCRC employees raced to see how quickly they could ring up the thousand dollars. In the end, they loaded up eight carts full.

“I’m incredibly grateful for Fred Meyer and iQ for everything that they do,” said Sanders. “Everything that we provide in the Family and Community Resource Center is donated by our community to help our families in need.”

The FCRC helps to assist families in the district experiencing housing instability, as well as connecting families with many other types of resources. It is a continuation of the district’s joint efforts with the Battle Ground Education Foundation, an all-volunteer, nonprofit community organization, whose purpose is to leverage community resources to help maintain education for all students in Battle Ground schools.
