Prairie High School senior wins prestigious internship at OHSU

Melody Brizuela had a busy summer. The Prairie High School senior was one of 10 students from around the region selected out of more than 100 applicants to receive the Ted R. Lilley CARE summer internship at Oregon Health Sciences University. Brizuela’s research poster on postpartum breast cancer also won an award.

“I’ve always loved science, so I felt like being able to work in a lab before going to college would be a really good and beneficial experience,” Brizuela said. “It really helped me to think and process things like a scientist.”

The 17-year-old is a member and former president of the Health Occupation Students of America program at Prairie and says the health care field is where she hopes to work after graduating college. “Solving cancer is a big goal,” she said, “but we can do these small steps to get there. Figuring that out was beneficial to me in understanding that science and research is a long journey, but it’s worth it in the end.”

Brizuela also started the Latino Student Union at Prairie last year and helped to form the BIPOC Club at the school as well. She is hoping to eventually complete her medical internship at OHSU.
