Board of Directors approves boundary changes: Maple Grove K-4 Conversion

Last night at its meeting, the Battle Ground Public Schools Board of Directors approved boundary changes for Fall 2019 that will alleviate overcrowding in the district by shifting students to schools with empty classrooms. As part of this boundary change, Maple Grove will be converted to a K-4 primary school, and the district is looking at the changes needed to the start and end times for Daybreak Primary and Middle to align with other schools in the district and accommodate transportation needs for all schools.

K-4 Conversion

In the K-4 conversion (image at right), middle school students in fifth through eighth grades who attend Maple Grove will move to either Daybreak or Tukes Valley Middle. The boundary between Tukes Valley and Daybreak Middle will be the same as the Battle Ground/Prairie high school boundary line that runs through the Maple Grove area. Also in this change, Pleasant Valley Primary and Middle students north of 179th Street will attend Daybreak schools, and Glenwood Heights Primary students east of Highway 503 (east 124th Avenue south of 119th Street) will go to Maple Grove K-4. The changes will impact approximately 487 students. More maps and information about the process of making boundary changes is on the district website.

Difficult Decision

This was not an easy decision for the board to make. The board weighed the impacts of each option, including student equity (academic opportunities for all), fiscal responsibility, transportation considerations, weather (north/south school boundaries), and staffing. The directors heard from families at three public forums and received hundreds of comments via the online survey.

Next Steps

We recognize that changing schools is difficult, and want to help ease the transition for students, families and staff. Families that are impacted by the boundary changes will receive a personal letter next month with notification about their 2019-20 school of attendance and information about transition plans. We will be working to provide activities this Spring that give students the opportunity to get comfortable with their new schools.
