Volunteer for Citizens Advisory, Curriculum Adoption committees

Aug. 15, 2022

Battle Ground Public Schools has several opportunities in the 2022-23 school year for volunteers who would like to have input into student learning and district initiatives. The district is seeking volunteers to serve on one of four committees: the Citizens Advisory Committee and three curriculum adoption committees. The district also welcomes family and community members who would like to volunteer in classrooms.

Citizens Advisory Committee

Members of the district’s Citizens Advisory Committee lend their voices to school programs, policies and issues through an advisory role to the superintendent and School Board.

The committee comprises 30-40 Battle Ground School District community members with representatives ranging from business, municipal, and faith-based leaders to parents and senior citizens. Every effort is made to include individuals that represent different roles and geographic areas. Terms are three years long, and meetings take place on the second Thursday of the month from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., October-May.

For more information, visit the district website at https://www.battlegroundps.org/citizens-advisory-committee/.

To apply, please fill out our online application by Aug. 25, 2022. Selected applicants will be notified via email by early September and are invited to attend the first Citizens Advisory Committee meeting of the school year at 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 13, 2022, in the Media Center (library) at Battle Ground High School, 300 W. Main St., Battle Ground.

Curriculum Adoption Committees

The district is seeking volunteers to review and provide input on curricula for three subject areas. Volunteers can apply to serve on one of three committees. Each committee will be responsible for reviewing one subject area:

  • English Language Arts curricula for grades K–8
  • Social Studies curricula for grades 5–6 and 8
  • Social Emotional Learning curricula for grades K–8

For each committee the district will select three parent/community members in addition to teachers and administrators.

Each committee will meet eight times with additional “homework” expected to be completed outside of meetings. All meetings will be held on Tuesdays, 8:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m., between Sept. 13, 2022 and April 18, 2023. Participants are also expected to attend the board meetings for adoption, likely in May and June.

Applicants will be selected in a two-step process: Step 1) Complete the BGPS Curriculum Adoption Committees Application form. The form must be filled out no later than Aug. 28, 2022. Step 2) Possible follow-up interview for the finalists from Step 1. The district anticipates selecting committee members by Sept. 1.

Classroom Volunteers

From kindergarten to high school and taking on a variety of roles, volunteers from the community help our students succeed. Recruitment and placement of volunteers is done at the school building level. Community volunteers frequently connect with a school that is close to their home or place of work, or choose an age level of students they prefer. Before you contact one of our schools about volunteer opportunities, please complete the Clearance Process online for parent, classroom and daytime field trips.
