International Dot Day, a global celebration of creativity, courage and collaboration, centers around the story of a caring teacher who encourages a doubting student to "make their mark." This simple act of creating a dot blossoms into a journey of self-discovery and inspiration, a message that Pleasant Valley Middle students have embraced.
The activity guides students through a three-step process to create their individual "dots." Starting with a central oil pastel dot, students then explore radial symmetry, filling their circles with monochromatic oil pastel patterns. The final step involves painting over the oil pastel with the same color, creating a wax resist effect where the bold lines shine through the watery paint. Students are encouraged to extend their creativity beyond the initial template, ensuring each dot is a unique expression.
The completed dots were installed in the library. The installation features a large "Vashti" (referencing the main character in "The Dot" story) surrounded by all the student-created dots. This strategic placement allows the sun to backlight the entire project, creating a stunning visual spectacle for all to enjoy.
This project not only fosters artistic expression but also instills valuable lessons in confidence; courage; and the impact of a single, creative dot.
A special thank you goes out to Ms. Boudreau! Here she is standing in front of the completed works of art.
