Cheryl O'Dell accepts her award in Washington, D.C.

Congratulations to our very own Cheryl O’Dell, a help desk technician and a leader in the Public School Employees union, who received the 2026 Recognizing Excellence and Classified Heroes Award. O’Dell, who has worked for the district since 1997, was selected as a result of her outstanding service; leadership; and dedication to students, staff, and the broader school community. Earlier this month she was honored alongside education support professionals from across the country during a ceremony hosted by the United Classified School Employees in Washington, D.C.

With nearly 30 years of service in Battle Ground Public Schools, O’Dell has made a lasting impact through her work supporting district technology needs and ensuring that students and staff have access to the tools and resources needed for success. In addition to her work in schools, O’Dell has been actively involved in leadership development, mentoring and advocacy efforts at both the state and national levels. Her peers recognize her for fostering collaboration, encouraging participation and supporting others in their professional growth.

“Cheryl is a fearless advocate and a true servant leader,” said Liz Lewis, state treasurer of the Public-School Employees of Washington SEIU Local 1948. “She consistently bridges the gap between staff and administration while ensuring members are heard, respected and supported.”

Classified education support professionals play a vital role in public schools by supporting student learning, school operations, health and safety, transportation, nutrition services, technology and more. Nationwide, these employees represent nearly one-third of the public education workforce.

Battle Ground Public Schools congratulates Cheryl O’Dell on this well-deserved national honor and thanks her for her dedicated service to students, staff and the community.
