Tower of Solitude, Leo Alpyorov, 10th grade, RHL. "My artwork is a photo of an empty lifeguard tower on an empty beach. You can see the clouds in the sky, the waves, and the sand. The leading lines of the lifeguard tower legs and the bright yellow color emphasize the watch tower and contrast the horizontal blue waves, sky, and sand. I created this artwork with a Nikon D5100 camera with an 18-135mm lens. I was walking down a trail by the beach, I noticed how the lifeguard tower stood out. One technique I used was centering the photo, knowing it would draw the eye towards the subject. In Photoshop post-processing, I adjusted the levels to make the photo lighter and made the lifeguard tower stand out more by using curves and contrast. I also removed people by the water using the clone stamp tool but did not use any AI generative fill. I want the viewer to see that there is a large potential for good things to happen even though life can look empty. The emptiness of the sea and the sky leaves room for your imagination to fill it. The possibility of a lifeguard represents advice from good friends and family to guide you, even when they are not there. This artwork developed exactly how I wanted it to. The way everything works together brings simple peace and joy. I would enjoy exploring nature photography more to capture nature’s beauty and progress my skills."

HIGH SCHOOL DIGITAL ART / VIDEO

Routine of Gomez on Planet X, Angel Fregoso-Olvera, Digital Art, 11th grade, Summit View High School

This 22 second stop motion animation explores the theme of daily routines through the lens of Gomez, an alien bug creature, living in a sparsely furnished apartment. The animation follows the character as it wakes up, gets dressed in business attire, prepares a simple breakfast, and heads out for the day. Though the setting and character are otherworldly, the actions are familiar, mirroring the everyday experiences of young adults navigating independence and responsibility.

The idea behind using an alien bug was to create a sense of distance from human norms while still connecting viewers through shared habits and rituals. I wanted to show that even beings from another world might have relatable routines. The minimalist apartment setting highlights the simplicity and sometimes lonely nature of early adulthood, when one is just beginning to build their life and space.

Creating this animation taught me a lot about planning, patience, and storytelling through movement. Every frame was carefully thought out to show personality—like how the bug checks itself in the mirror or removes breakfast from an electric appliance. These small details help bring life to the character without the use of dialogue.

Overall, this project was a way for me to express the quiet rhythm of mornings, and how even the most mundane routines can say something meaningful about who we are—even if we're not exactly human.

The Shapes That Make Us, Milo Trump, 12th grade, Digital Art, RHL. "This is my grandpa. He was trying on flame glasses and I took a picture of him. The element that is most obvious is shape, because the whole picture is made out of triangles and squares. The most obvious principle of design is the emphasis around his head due to the shapes and color."

Low-Poly Memories, Leo Miller, Digital Art, 11th grade, RHL

Low-Poly Memories, Leo Miller, Digital Art, 11th grade, RHL. "This is a geometric artwork based on a photo I took at my summer camp. It’s hard to make out in some places, but it’s of a clearing in the forest the camp takes place in, with three of my friends walking through it. In this artwork, shapes were incredibly important, and each one has a defined outline with sharp edges. No curves. I created this piece in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. I used a grid and a pen (line segments) tool to trace my photo and break it down into different shapes. Once that was done, I exported it into Photoshop to fill each shape with corresponding colors and create a geometric copy of my photo. Low-poly art has always made me kind of nostalgic, since it’s an older form of art, and can be very visually striking. I decided to combine that with the nostalgia that comes with remembering my time at camp. This was a photo I liked a lot, since it was really sunny and that caused the original photo to look a little otherworldly. I wanted to try to capture that feeling. This artwork definitely didn’t turn out how I intended, and the road to get here was tough at best. I mentioned earlier that I had to export this to Photoshop. That was not supposed to happen originally, but it had to happen because in Adobe Illustrator, I accidentally made it as a bunch of disconnected lines, and Illustrator had no way to combine them down. So I exported to Photoshop and finished it up there. If I did this again, I would still export to Photoshop, but I’d pay more attention to colors and shapes. I think that the lines and coloring aren’t very well done, and if I could, I would adjust to make them more communicative of the original scene."

Relaxing Sunset, Barrett Cobb, 3rd grade, MGP. "I like to draw sunsets. Sometimes I make mistakes, but that helps me get better. I put together all the things I learned from my mistakes to make this the best one yet. I used clay. I like how I have more control with clay than paint. It took me while, but that is what you need sometimes to make it the best it can be."

The Two Whales, Maya Junio, 4th grade, MGP

The Two Whales, Maya Junio, 4th grade, MGP. "I was inspired by Barbara Reid and her books. I saw a picture of a whale that I liked, and I made it my own idea. I pushed clay on top of paper to make the whales, and mixed up the color clay for the splashing waves. I colored a background and cut my clay pieces out and added them on top. I feel amazing looking at my art piece!"
