Reagan Anderson, 9th grade, RHL, teacher Becky Broyles. "Reflection of Imperfection Digital Inkjet Print with Archival Ink on Luster Photo Paper. Theme Show: Reflection. My artwork features two candles: one tall and lit with a flame, the other short with an unlit wick. The tall candle is in the foreground of the picture, while the short one is in the reflection. The subject matter is reflection, but it could also be interpreted as light in the darkness if one so wishes. The element of art most obvious in my work is the flame of the candle, which contrasts against the dark background and immediately draws the eye. Movement is also created through the vertical lines of the candles, the curved line of the mirror, and the horizontal lines of the stacked books on the right. To take this photo, I used a camera and angled it to the right to give it more depth. I set the camera on a stack of books to keep the angle the same as I took multiple pictures. I kept the flash off, only using the light from the candle to take the picture. Originally, there were two photos: one using the tall candle and the other using the small candle. Using Photoshop, I combined the two photos together, and blended them to look more natural. I then edited the photo, adjusting the contrast, vibrance, and curves to enhance each component of the picture. My inspiration for this work initially came from the idea of Light in the Darkness. I knew from the beginning I wanted to use candles, because they provide light in darkness. Then I thought of setting the candle in front of a mirror, and altering it to look as if there were two different candles. This photo shows reflection through both candles, representing the ideation of who we present ourselves as, and the reflection of the truth the mirror shows us. What this photo means is that often we create a perfect version of ourselves in our head and want to portray ourselves in that way, and so we feel inclined to act accordingly; to try and be perfect in everything that we do, say, and think. To be seen as faultless and flawless by the people around us. This represents the tall, flame-lit candle, bright, unblemished, and standing undaunted. But in reality, we are quite the opposite. Each and every person has their own things that make them far from “perfect,” and we all see the world and perceive it differently, which leads us to think and act the way we do. We have many flaws, many imperfections, which are things we cannot change. Attempting to will only lead to the feelings of failure, disappointment, and frustration. This represents the small candle, coated in old wax, with an extinguished flame, illuminated only by the fruitless hope of perfection. The emotions I hope to convey are contentment and encouragement. What I want people to take away from this photo is the understanding that perfection is unrealistic. To try and be so is to betray yourself. It is better to be empathetic to yourself and to others, be hardworking, indulge in the hobbies that bring you joy, surround yourself with people who understand you, and have ambition, but don’t try to climb up the mountains you don’t have the equipment for. Overall, my artwork did not turn out entirely as I intended, but it resulted in being better than I expected. Something I would do differently if I could is to blend the pictures together better to make the photo look more natural. Otherwise, I think my photo ended up representing my idea in a great way. In the future, I would enjoy exploring this theme further in the future, and taking more photos to represent it."
