HOMELESS STUDENTS SUPPORT

Support for Students Experiencing Homelessness

Students who lack a fixed, regular and adequate night-time residence might qualify for services that support their education during times of transition. Battle Ground Public Schools implements the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, which provides students who are identified as homeless with certain support services to assist them with their educational success.

Under the definition in the law, the term “homeless” includes individuals who lack a fixed, regular and adequate night-time residence for economic or similar reasons. This may include children and youth who are:

  • Sharing the housing of other persons due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or a similar reason (sometimes referred to as doubled-up);
  • Living in motels, hotels, trailer parks, or camp grounds due to lack of alternative adequate accommodations;
  • Living in emergency or transitional shelters;
  • Abandoned in hospitals; or
  • Have a primary night-time residence that is a public or private place not designed for or ordinarily used as a regular sleeping accommodation for people;
  • Living in cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings, substandard housing, bus or train stations, or similar settings;

It also applies to migratory children who qualify as homeless because they are living in circumstances described above.
