BGPS Assessment Results

Each spring, all Washington public school students in grades 3-8 and high school are tested in English Language Arts (ELA) and math. Students in grades 5 and 8 and high school are also tested in science. This testing meets state and federal requirements. 2015 was the first year our students used the new online testing system known as Smarter Balanced for ELA and math. This system provides a new baseline for student progress toward becoming Career and College Ready upon high school graduation. This system also uses a new format to report student results. Learning Standards
Battle Ground Public Schools follows the Washington State Learning Standards for all grade levels and subjects. The learning standards are developed through collaborative, public processes led by curriculum associations across the state and nation. The Washington State Learning Standards incorporate the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and mathematics. Learn more on the district’s Learning Standards webpage.

National Assessment of Educational Progress
The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) is a program of the U.S. Department of Education. It is the only nationally representative and continuing assessment of what students in the United States know and can do in various subject areas. Commonly called The Nation’s Report Card, NAEP is the only test in the United States that allows comparisons of the performance of students in Washington with performance of students nationally. Assessments are conducted periodically in mathematics, reading, science, writing, the arts, civics, economics, geography, and U.S. history. There is no district-level or school-level NAEP data.

School Improvement
School Improvement is a continuous process schools use to ensure that all students are achieving at high levels. Continuous improvement of public schools is essential to providing increased student performance and quality results. Innovative, exemplary, and research based programs, coupled with staff development, focused and aligned resources, and public participation in planning are critical factors in improving schools. All schools engage in school improvement planning. In determining how a school is doing, Washington State uses a differentiated accountability system and support for Priority and Focus schools identified with a methodology using Federal Guidance and the State Board of Education’s Achievement Index.

Using the State Board of Education’s Achievement Index, Summit View High School was the only school in Battle Ground Public Schools identified as a Priority School due their high school graduation rate falling below the 60% state requirement. The mission of Summit View High School is to provide educational opportunities to high school students whose needs are not being met by the traditional high school program.

On December 10, 2015, President Obama reauthorized the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) as the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). The ESSA replaces the previous reauthorization of the ESEA, known as the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act, enacted in 2002. The ESSA will be fully operational in school year 2017-18. The NCLB Act requires all Title I schools and districts receiving federal funding to report the school/district improvement status for the 2016-2017 school year.
