Battle Ground Students continue learning during Summer Academy

The weather may point to summer, but nearly 640 primary and middle school students are back in school this week to take advantage of the Battle Ground Public Schools K-8 Summer Academy. Previously available only to eligible primary school students, Battle Ground Public Schools is using federal relief funds this year to expand the program to include middle school grade levels and provide bus transportation to students who need it.

The Summer Academy was offered to eligible students who need additional support to reach grade level skills.  The Academy is held four days a week through July 29 at Yacolt and Glenwood Heights Primary and the River HomeLink campus. A total of 35 teachers, 30 classified employees, as well as a nurse and coordinator for each building work to provide the education.

At the high school grade level, nearly 350 students are taking advantage of free credit recovery courses, while 97 students are enrolled in original credit courses. Original credit courses typically include a fee, but the federal relief funds have allowed the district to provide free access to one half-credit course for students who are behind. Classes are completed primarily online, with an open lab available at Battle Ground High School, and teachers available for in-person or remote assistance.

The district is also making free K-12 at-home extended learning opportunities available, covering math and reading skills with self-paced online instruction that matches the student’s skill level. The programs are available between June 16 and July 31, with more information on accessing the curriculum on the district website.
