BGPS expands access to free meals for students in Kindergarten through fourth grade

Aug. 14, 2023

Starting this school year, Battle Ground Public Schools students in kindergarten through fourth grade will have access to free breakfast and lunch at school, regardless of household income. The Washington legislature recently approved new funding to expand access to free meals for primary students in schools where at least 40 percent of families qualify for free/reduced-price meals (that threshold will lower to 30 percent in 2024-25). Currently, three primary schools in the district qualify under the expanded eligibility guidelines, but Battle Ground Public Schools, in partnership with our food services provider Sodexo, made the decision to expand access to all K-4 students throughout the district.

Even with more students having access to free meals, it is important for all families to complete a Free and Reduced-price Meal Application (русский) (espaňol), even if they do not believe they will qualify. Completion of this form provides the state funding that helps to provide this benefit. In addition, families who qualify under the free/reduced-price program and complete a Consent to Share form (русский) (espaňol) may be able to access free or reduced-fee sports or other activities. Please note, students must have a new free/reduced-price application and consent to share form on file prior to registering for fall sports in order to qualify for fee waivers.

For students in grades five through 12, any families that qualify for free/reduced-price status will continue to receive meals at no cost. For those who purchase breakfast and/or lunch at school, prices will remain unchanged this year after a slight increase in 2022.

Apply for meal benefits online through Skyward Family Access or download the paper application, fill out and return.

We recommend submitting your application prior to the start of school to ensure the continuation of coverage. If a new application is not submitted, you will be responsible for meal charges (grades five through 12). When you are approved for benefits, Battle Ground Public Schools will send you a confirmation letter. If you have not received an approval letter for the current school year, you must complete an application to receive meal benefits.
