Catch the magic with River HomeLink drama’s presentation of ‘Aladdin Jr.’

Nov. 16, 2023

River HomeLink students pose for a promotional photo in their Aladdin Jr. costumesFor the first time in many years, River HomeLink’s drama program will have two full weekends to present their upcoming production of Disney’s “Aladdin Jr.”

“Most people don’t realize the limited turnaround time that my students have to make a show run smoothly,” said drama director Sandy Sparks. “I am always so proud of them because you would never know they hadn’t rehearsed on stage until that week.”

Shows will be at Prairie High School (11311 NE 119th St., Vancouver, WA 98662) on Friday, Dec. 1 and 8, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 2 and 9, at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults or $5 for children 10 and under, available at the door or purchase in advance online or at River HomeLink.

“Aladdin Jr.” is a colorful, magical, reimagining of the classic Disney cartoon, featuring beloved characters like Genie, Jasmine, Iago and, of course, Aladdin.

Olivia Isse plays Genie and helped choreograph the complex dance routines along with classmate Averi Mason. “Dancing is a way to tell a story and express emotion,” Isse said. “The dance numbers have been turning out amazing and will look so magical onstage.”

“Many of the costumes that the leads have were homemade, so they hold a very special place in our hearts,” Mason said, adding that she’s excited for the audience to see their dance routines. “We have many people who dance, so it will be a really fun thing for the audience to see people doing flips and tricks in the show.”

“These kids work really hard and I am so excited to see all their hard work come to fruition,” added Kairi Isse, a parent volunteer and music director for the program. “Seeing students choreograph and build sets and contribute to the success of the play is so rewarding!”

James Cavallero says his favorite thing about playing Aladdin is the way he shifts from being a common “street rat” to an uptight prince.

“Aside from acting, the camaraderie of theater is my favorite part,” Cavallero says. “Working together with a bunch of super fun people is a good start or end to any day.”

“Aladdin Jr.” is presented through special arrangement with Music Theater International of New York.
