Prairie High School gearing up for second annual Winter Carnival

Nov. 30, 2023

High school students planning an eventAfter a successful first year, Prairie High School is busy preparing an even bigger Winter Carnival for this year. Happening on Saturday, Dec. 2, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., this free event is open to everyone and features a pancake breakfast, hot cocoa, games and even gifts that children can select for themselves and an adult.

“We really want to build trust in our community,” said Itzel Contreras Montiel, a sophomore and Associated Student Body member who is leading the committee planning the event. “We want to showcase that school isn’t only about getting an education. It’s also about building these relationships and friendships, even helping others who are in need.”

Winter Carnival was started with the goal of building relationships in the community, creating empathy among students and staff and decreasing the stress and hardship that can often come during the holiday season.

Contreras Montiel said the event also helps students and their families get to know the various clubs or programs that are available. Students already involved in those clubs learn about working together, carrying a plan from concept to completion and working closely with teachers and administrators to get the job done.

“I am incredibly proud of this event and all of the students, staff, families, community partners and resources who have supported it,” said Assistant Principal Erin Thompson. “At Prairie, we strive to be more than just a high school. We are part of the community that we serve.”

How you can help

Students work on crafts for a holiday event

Leading up to Saturday’s event, the school is hoping to increase donations of toys and items for grown-ups. Winter Carnival features a Santa’s Workshop where children can pick out a toy and something for their parent or guardian. Donations should be new or like-new and unwrapped. They can be dropped off at the school office until the end of the day on Friday, Dec. 1.
