Study of pandemic’s effects on learning

June 5, 2023

New research on the pandemic’s effects on education found that Battle Ground students’ learning was less impacted than that of students across the state as a whole. Researchers compared 2019 test scores to 2022 test scores to calculate learning loss in grade equivalents. One grade equivalent represents approximately one school year’s worth of learning.

  • On average, Washington students lost more than five months (-0.65 grade equivalent) of learning in math. In Battle Ground, students lost three months (-0.37 grade equivalent) in math.
  • On average, Washington students lost about three months (-0.35 grade equivalent) in reading. In Battle Ground, students lost about one month (-0.12 grade equivalent) in reading.
  • The average U.S. public school student in third through eighth grades lost the equivalent of a half year of learning in math and a quarter of a year in reading.

Battle Ground continues to work to recover learning losses. This includes staff collaboration in professional learning communities to support students; before- and after-school programs; individual and small group tutoring; and behavioral, academic, social, emotional and mental health support. The district will continue its efforts to ensure that students are meeting standards and are prepared for post-high school work, training or education.
