Veterans Day observed throughout Battle Ground Public Schools

From a drive-thru event at Daybreak Middle School, to flag ceremonies, songs, and poems, students all across the Battle Ground Public Schools district took time this week to honor the men and women who’ve served in our nation’s military. 

Veterans Day events have looked somewhat different the past two years due to health and safety requirements, but students, teachers, and building staff have worked to find creative ways to continue the tradition. At Daybreak Middle School, leadership and ASB students worked to put together a drive-thru event, with students waving flags and handing out individualized thank you cards to veterans who drove through the parking lot.

At CAM Academy, a married couple who both served in the military spoke in the school’s auditorium, with their speech streamed live into every classroom. The school’s celebration also featured student performances of patriotic songs and a live rendition of our country’s national anthem, as well as a poem and a video on the history of Veterans Day.

The Battle Ground High School AFJROTC and JROTC cadets attended events on Veterans Day and recorded color guard videos for use in the productions of other schools throughout the district. They also set up a display outside of the high school library to honor veterans who work in the building.

Prairie High School JROTC cadets handed out fake poppies in front of the school on Wednesday, and the ASB students created a video to honor veterans which was shown during sixth period.

Middle Schools

Chief Umtuch School put together a slideshow for students featuring videos of the 8th grade band playing patriotic songs, as well as a tribute to local veterans.

Laurin Middle School put together something similar, featuring student performances and stories from school staff who served in the military.

Amboy Middle School also put together their own video honoring veterans connected to the school.

Pleasant Valley Middle School heard from guest speaker John Shirron, a retired US Air Force member, and featured reflections from students on what Veterans Day means to them.

Primary Schools

Yacolt Primary School put together a video featuring students reading letters from veterans, along with photos of local veterans submitted by families.

At Tukes Valley Primary, students waved hundreds of small American flags as they cited the pledge of allegiance in the morning, and then watched a video featuring veterans connected to students and staff of the school.

Students at Glenwood Heights put together performances of two patriotic songs: A Grateful Nation, and America the Beautiful.
